The Royal Cavalier

Big Dog | December 6th, 2011

The Cavalier or specifically called as the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a breed of dog named after King Charles II of England. The Cavalier Spaniel is the best companion dog that is closest to humans once it is trained. The Cavalier’s dome-head and round eyes make its face look friendly and kind. The fur of the Cavalier Spaniel is long and silky hence it needs regular brushing to avoid tangles and roughness. There are sub categories of Cavaliers: there is a Cavalier called Prince Charles which possesses black, white and tan patterns; another is the Bleinham King Charles who has white coat and chest-nut marks; the original black and tan-colored Cavalier and; the Ruby which has a solid red color. There may be a lot of breeds but the positive characteristics of a Cavalier is still the same.

When it comes to the procedures of taming an animal, there is a psychological terminology that pertains to the positive reinforcement training in dogs. This type of training is called clicker training. Clicker training is done by means of a metal device that produces a clicking sound when pressed. If the dog has successfully executed a command, a treat is given right after the “clicker” is pressed. The clicking sound serves as a stimulus for the dog the follow a command because there will be a reward afterwards.

Clicker training as well as other types of training is very effective when it comes to teaching a Cavalier Spaniel. Cavalier Spaniel breeds are very intelligent which is why they are one of the most recommended pets for first time owners. The Cavaliers are playful and gentle and nature and they can bring about happiness to any member of the family. The clicker training, despite the intelligence that the Cavalier already has, will motivate it to do more, play more and be more active than usual.

Does Clicker Training Work for Cavalier?

Big Dog | November 30th, 2011

CavalierYes, it does. As a matter of fact, Cavalier’s act in response to clicker training is good. Clicker training is the most efficient, commendable technique to control and train a dog’s behaviors as it is being taught of the basic commands. Before the training of the dog starts, the trainer must first familiarize in how to use the clicker strategy so it will be easy to teach the Cavalier with almost anything.

Training via clicker works as dog correlate the sound of the clicker and your command, the sound is a strong and sharp sound that is audible up to 20 meters away. The dog must learn that the sound of the clicker is its reward for being able to act with a desirable behavior. This can be done by accompanying the sound of clicker with a reward such as biscuits for dogs of praise from its master. Remember, never to use the clicker for any other reason except as a reward for the dog. You may think that an oral command works fine too but the distinctive sound of the clicker that goes with a command is so much better and yields to a better outcome, as been testified by the very satisfied pet owners who used clicker.

Be sure to follow the step to get the maximum result. You first have to convince your dog to do what you desire, may it be rolling over, sitting, etc. As soon as he was able to deliver what you want, mark it with praise, reward and a clicker. It would usually take about two or three markings before it absorbs that what it did is a positive behavior that deserves positive outcome. This is better that oral command for it brings out better and faster response. And also, reward can come in praise, pat, hug, etc. that is not necessary all the time, if your Cavalier is used to the clicker system, sometimes all it wants is just to please its master.

Is a Cavalier Spaniel a good choice for me?

Big Dog | October 25th, 2010

If you would like to have a little and lovely, furry companion by your side, then Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is one of the best breeds for you. These dogs are true friends of the whole family, no matter how old the members are – they like children and elder people as well. They are extroverted, love being indoors and are fond of playing with their humans. With proper socialization they get on well with other dogs and other smaller animals as well – but you should be careful, as this breed has a sporting and hunting nature.

Cavalier Spaniels have medium or long hair that is silky and wavy, so regular brushing is needed for the dogs. Sadly, this breed is prone to serious health issues like heart diseases, hip dysplasia, diabetes or even allergies. Therefore a regular visit to the vet is a must.

Training of this breed is relatively easy since the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is an intelligent breed, so consistency and many rewards will do their best during lessons. They can easily be trained for agility, hunting and they are also excellent therapy dogs.

All in all, this breed is excellent for people who want to have a little friend that is very lively, devoted and active. All you have to provide them is a small, fenced yard for daily exercise and much of love.

I hope that this short introduction was able to help you decide whether Cavalier Spaniel is the best breed for you.
